Dinosaurs in the Bible, Behemoth

Back to : DINOSAURS

In the Bible most commonly known is the Behemoth.  Let’s take a close look at the creature described in Job 40:15-24

The description in verse 15 is that God created him with man. "...which I made with thee...” God made the Behemoth with Job, (with man, particularly with Adam). He is a herbivore "...he eateth grass as an ox."

In verse 16 he is described as having great strength. "Lo now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly." God mentions this creatures power a second time in verse 17. “...the sinews of his stones are wrapped together.”

In verse 17 is a description of his tail. "He moveth his tail like a cedar." The Behemoth has a tail that he moves and the tail is compared to a cedar. A cedar is a type of tree.

Verse 18 describes his bones as being strong like brass and iron. "His bones are as strong pieces of brass; his bones are like bars of iron."

Verse 19 says that “He is the chief of the ways of God.” God refers to him as chief of the creatures that He has created; a strong mighty creature.

Verse 20 gives a hint of Behemoth’s environment as being in the fields. "Surely the mountains bring him forth food, where all the beasts of the field play."

Verse 21 along with verse 22 also describes his environment of being in the woods. "He lieth under the shady trees, in the covert of the reed, and fens."

In verse 23 we are introduced to his mass comsumption and that he is slow or not afraid, but yet aware of the things around him. "Behold, he drinketh up a river, and hasteth not: he trusteth that he can draw up Jordan into his mouth."

Let,s take an assessment of these verses and look at some facts about this creature.

This creature is powerful! God mentions his great power twice. His bones are strong as iron and brass. God names him chief among animals. He eats grass and a reference is made about food being brought by the river. I will not speculate what this could be. His tail is like a cedar and it lives in the field and woods apparently near the river. Some people have made reference that this creature is a hippo or an elephant, but I do not see that either of these animals has a tail like a cedar. I believe the Bible, that all creatures were created on day six including that which we call dinosaurs today. With this in mind, consider all known creatures and the attributes of this one. To many Christians (myself included) that believe all creatures were created on day six, also believe this creature to be a Sauropoda, (Dinosaurs with the long necks and pillar like legs). This creature is known today by eye witnesses in the Congo as Mokele-Mbembe. I personally have met a man whose grandmother saw Mokele-Mbembe.
